The departure and flight to the USA as an Au Pair can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience. Many steps are involved in ensuring a smooth journey, and being well-prepared can make a significant difference in how the trip unfolds. From the final preparations before leaving home to navigating the flight itself, there are several key details to consider. This guide will outline important tips and information.
Usually, your local Au Pair agency is going to book the flight for you. Afterwards, you will receive all the details about your departure date and time. There may be other Au Pairs departing at the same time – that is a good opportunity to start making new friends right away!
Final Preparations Before Departure
Before the flight, all the necessary documents should be gathered. A valid passport, visa approval, flight tickets, and any required documents from the Host Family should be kept in an easily accessible folder. These items will be needed at various stages of the journey, especially at immigration control in the USA. It’s also always a good idea to have a copy of important documents to be kept separately in case of loss or theft.
Packing is another crucial task. While clothing is the primary consideration, it’s important for essential items such as toiletries, medications, and any comfort items for the journey to be packed. A carry-on bag should be prepared with items that will be needed during the flight, such as snacks, headphones, a neck pillow, a water bottle, and a charger. Keep in mind that there are many restrictions about things you are allowed and not allowed to take on board. Please check all the details on your airline’s website.
Saying Goodbye
The emotional aspect of leaving home cannot be overlooked. A sense of bittersweetness is often felt when bidding farewell to family and friends. It’s advisable to allow enough time to say goodbye properly, as this moment can be emotionally charged. However, keep in mind what an adventure you are going into! You will make so many amazing memories and luckily there are phones to keep in touch with friends and family.
The Flight: What to Expect
The flight to the USA will likely be long, depending on the departure location. For most Au Pairs, the flight will include at least one layover before reaching the final destination. It’s recommended to review the details of your flight carefully, including any layover times and connecting flights. Checking in online in advance is often the most efficient option, allowing for easier navigation through the airport.
Remember to be at the airport at least two hours before your departure time. It is also very helpful to tag your suitcase with your name, home and the Host Family’s address. Every now and then it happens that suitcases “get lost”. They don’t really get lost but probably just landed at a wrong airport. The airline makes sure that your suitcase will be brought to the stated address!
Clearing Immigration Upon Arrival
Once the flight lands, the next step is clearing immigration. Depending on the specific airport, queues at immigration can vary in length, so patience may be required. You will need to present your visa documents, and biometric data may be taken as part of the entry process. Once immigration is cleared, baggage claim will be your next stop. Ensuring that the luggage is properly labeled and identifiable will make the process smoother.
It’s also important for Au Pairs to remember that they may need to go through customs after collecting their bags. Customs declarations, including any items brought into the country, should be completed accurately. An understanding of the regulations on bringing certain items into the USA will help prevent any issues during this stage.
Meeting the Host Family
Once all travel procedures have been completed, it’s finally time to meet your Host Family. Often, the family will be waiting at arrivals or will have coordinated a meeting point beforehand. This first encounter is an exciting and important moment, as it marks the beginning of a year-long journey.
We hope this helped you a little bit and we hope you have an amazing time as an Au Pair in the USA!
